Uniswap Ships a Dynamic-Fee “VolatilePair” Hook for ETH/USDC as v4 Leads DEX Volume. Plus: Unichain Migrates Oct. 29

Uniswap’s v4 hooks are moving from experiment to product line. On Oct. 14, Uniswap Labs put its VolatilePair Hook live on Ethereum mainnet, starting with an ETH/USDC pool. Instead of one static swap fee, the hook sets a separate fee for each side of the trade and recalculates both on every swap as the market moves. Uniswap says the goal is to let LPs “keep more of the value they create.” It joins StablePair, Permissioned Pools, and LitePSM in Uniswap’s hook lineup. It also lands while DefiLlama ranks Uniswap V4 as the largest DEX by 30-day volume across all chains. Here’s how the fees work and what they mean for your execution price.

The launch

VolatilePair launched with ETH/USDC on Ethereum mainnet on Oct. 14. It follows the StablePair Hook, which launched in September and, according to Uniswap, handled $3.1 billion in volume in its first four weeks. Uniswap says volatile pairs have done more than $500 billion in volume on its protocol this year.

According to Uniswap’s developer docs, VolatilePair pools can only be created by Uniswap Labs, and the hook can be upgraded and reconfigured through governance. The hook’s proxy is at 0x000022Ec4eBD6b12294396E852E4C3876b253Cc0, and the launch ETH/USDC pool ID is 0x98316e8405502774a5d0a0761276b5d26505a8195c1905169864008d5e7a3eea.

How the two-sided fee works

In a normal pool, buyers and sellers pay the same fixed fee tier. VolatilePair instead keeps two fees, an ask fee for buying and a bid fee for selling, and recalculates both on every swap. Per Uniswap’s documentation, each side’s fee is the sum of three parts:

  • a permanent fee that carries over between blocks;
  • a temporary fee that lasts for one block; and
  • an extra fee within the block, which rises as more swaps hit the same side within that block.

The fee doesn’t depend on the size of your swap. What changes it is market movement and the order flow the pool has already seen. The idea is to charge more on the side where arbitrage and other informed traders are hitting the pool, so LPs lose less to them, while keeping the other side cheap.

What traders should check

  • The fee is no longer a fixed tier. Look at the quoted fee and route before you confirm.
  • Fees can differ by direction, so buying ETH and selling ETH may cost different amounts at the same moment.
  • Compare quotes across aggregators and routers (Uniswap’s own interface and API, UniswapX, 1inch, CoW Swap). The cheapest venue can change from block to block.

DEX volume snapshot

From DefiLlama’s public API, pulled Oct. 17, 2026, 01:11 UTC, 30-day figures:

  • All chains: $282.6 billion, down 9.5% from the prior 30 days. DefiLlama’s DEX list currently includes the prediction market Kalshi, which inflates the total.
  • Uniswap V4: $38.41 billion, the No. 1 entry. Uniswap V3: $37.69 billion.
  • Ethereum: $42.93 billion across DEXs. Uniswap V4 on Ethereum did $14.70 billion over 30 days and $443.6 million in the latest 24 hours.
  • Solana: $69.73 billion.

These numbers change by the hour. Check DefiLlama for the latest figures. (We left out the all-chain 24-hour total because one large Solana venue was missing its 24-hour figure when we pulled the data.)

Other Uniswap news

  • Unichain migrates to OP Enterprise. The testnet moved on Oct. 13, and mainnet is scheduled for Oct. 29. Uniswap says the chain ID, contracts, and balances stay the same, and Unichain remains a Stage 1 rollup.
  • Uniswap API updates (Oct. 2): fees can be split among up to four recipients, calldata is returned instantly, and bridging plus swapping can happen in a single transaction.

What to watch

  • On-chain TVL and volume for the VolatilePair ETH/USDC pool
  • Additional pairs or hooks, which Uniswap says are on the roadmap
  • The Unichain mainnet migration on Oct. 29
